What Is Tether (USDT)?

Tether (USDT) is one of the world’s most popular cryptocurrencies. More to the point, it is the world’s largest stablecoin, a cryptocurrency that pegs its value to a real-world asset, usually a currency. In Tether’s case, that asset is the US dollar, with a 1:1 relationship between USDT and USD. As a result, Tether’s price chart is nearly flat.

Tether issues USDT on multiple blockchains and maintains the peg by minting and redeeming tokens against its reserves. Most of those reserves are held in short-term US Treasury bills and other cash equivalents. The rest includes secured loans, Bitcoin, and physical gold. The gold gives the reserves a tangible element, but both gold and Bitcoin can fall in value, which can shrink the cushion Tether holds above what it owes.

Because of its peg to the dollar, USDT is the default dollar substitute for trading more volatile cryptocurrencies. In other words, it acts as a stable bridge between traditional currencies and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. That said, its stability comes from its design, not a guarantee.

Although Tether keeps some of its reserves in gold, it also offers a product built entirely around a tangible asset. Tether Gold (XAUT) is a token backed by physical gold, with a price that tracks the spot price of gold.
